CreativeWorks is a vocational training program in theater production and digital media that prepares youth and young adults to secure employment and prepare for higher education.
The program was created in 2008 in response to the high teen unemployment rate in Prince George’s County, where workers age 21 and under have an unemployment rate of 27.1% compared to 23.5% for the state of Maryland.
Young people in the County face challenges to success. Many of our participants:
- Live in a single-parent household, foster care or are homeless;
- Are pregnant or parenting; lack basic skills and support for pursuing employment.
CreativeWorks gives participants life and employability skills to prepare them for a successful future.
CHANGED ATTITUDE: With support from Joe’s staff, participants believe they are capable and deserving of a future that involves a good job and/or higher education.
CHANGED ASPIRATIONS: Participants realize they are capable of success as they are introduced to colleges, employers and other partner organizations.
NEW SKILLS: With professional instructors and equipment, participants learn marketable skills they can put to use immediately for internships and employment.
NEW OPPORTUNITIES: Participants have increased job opportunities and support to apply to college and/or other training programs.

Recruitment for the program is facilitated by relationships with area high schools, the Department of Social Services and other nonprofit partners.
In eight years, more than 300 students have been served by CreativeWorks:
