Join Nootana and explore the Indian classical melodies and movements that ornate the multi-million dollar Indian Film Industry. While Bollywood and pop culture dominate the industry worldwide, "Hidden Treasures" explores common and lesser-known Indian classical elements in current and historic films. Nootana, meaning Innovation in Sanskrit, is dedicated to performing live Indian classical music and dance while incorporating music, dance, themes, stories, and perspectives from around the world.

General Admission

  • Adult $28

  • Students, Seniors & Veterans $17

Centuries-old Indian music and dance meets 21st-century sensibilities, thanks to the artists of Nootana. The volunteer group performs traditional art forms, smoothly integrating innovation and tradition. The ensemble celebrated Asian Pacific American Heritage month in May with an original dance drama. VOA's June Soh caught up with some of the artists at the show.

ABOUT NOOTANA: Founded in 2012, Nootana is a 100-percent volunteer run performing arts ensemble committed to fostering innovation within the Indian classical arts. We perform modern representations of Indian classical music and dance by integrating music, dance, stories, and styles from around the world.

Sanskrit for “innovation,” Nootana plays a crucial role in influencing the arts space in the D.C. area by increasing the exposure of South Asian culture to residents. Our mission is to build a cultural exchange in the D.C. metropolitan area through performance, education, and outreach.

With more than 50 professionals, students, and friends that help run the administrative, performance, and outreach efforts of the organization, Nootana is able to foster a community of artists.

OUR ENSEMBLE: Our performance ensemble is comprised of dancers and musicians from the DMV, who hail from all over the nation and the world, and may carry with them roots in South Asia, or intertwine their worldly roots with ours through practices, shows, and performances. We encourage anyone with a passion to learn about Indian culture and a willingness to explore the artistic ties between world cultures to join us.
