free•doms Art Exhibition Artist Talk

There is a significant time period in America that is little known—in Prince George's County history specifically—when enslaved Africans sued their captors for their freedom. Some gained freedom for themselves and their families while others did not.

Free-doms (frē′dəms) the condition to be and act without control or interference by another or by circumstance—broaches the subject of freedom for all and its meaning for the individual and the collective. The works in this exhibition are thoughtful and emotionally evocative. Free-doms defines and questions American free-doms both historically and as it's being re-defined in contemporary times. By using sourced material from Maryland State Archives, artists Dwayne Martin, Selena Noir, Khadija Jahmila, and Underdog the DJ have researched, re-imagined, and based these original works on the historical lawsuits known as Freedom Stories.

The art exhibition runs from September 9-November 4, 2023.
