Nootana Presents: Eclipse and Equinox
As a New Moon shadows the sun in a deep partial solar eclipse and the autumn equinox brings day and night into balance, Nootana begins its 13th season with a performance where celestial wonder meets the timeless traditions of Indian classical music and dance.
From the swift spins of Kathak to the sculpted grace of Bharatanatyam, from the intricate rhythm of the mridangam to the shimmering melodies of our voices, Eclipse & Equinox is a journey through rhythm and melody inspired by the heavens above. Every beat, every gesture, flows with the force of cosmic energy—reminding us that the arts, like the universe, transcend borders and connect us all.
The name Eclipse & Equinox reflects both the celestial events that grace our performance weekend and the deeper meaning behind them:
Eclipse — transformation, renewal, and the hidden beauty revealed in moments of shadow.
Equinox — balance, harmony, and the meeting of opposites.
Together, they echo what Nootana strives to create—performances that move beyond the stage, uniting artist and audience in shared wonder.
At the Saturday, September 20th, 8:00 PM performance, we will honor two visionaries with our annual Preronadayini (“Inspiration Giver”) Award:
Lakshmi Swaminathan, for her many decades of artistry and commitment to inclusivity through Bharatanatyam and the arts in this region
Sitar Maestro & Painter Alif Laila, for her boundary-breaking musical and artistic legacy that continually crosses boundaries and connects communities.
The Sunday, September 21st, 4:00 PM performance is a special VIP event—filmed live and followed by an intimate reception with the artists.
