Kujichagulia Afro-Futurism Show by Taratibu Youth Association

Afro-futurism evolved as an expressive outlet and platform to understand and interpret the history of race and African/Black cultural identity. This show draws from the past and present using Kujichagulia- Self Determination, as a lens to acknowledge and honor some of our cultural norms from African and African American history. We tell the stories of an African young woman’s Rite of Passage, while honoring the contributions of her life; we honor our Babas through a prayer sung in Xhosa and the South African Gumboot as well as other stories that give a window to our place on this planet in the future.

Raediant Movement Presents: Deep In My Bones

Deep In My Bones embodies feelings of frustration resulting from being African Americans who experience rejection and accusations of misappropriation by some of our Diasporic brothers and sisters when we move our bodies in ways predominantly seen in African and Caribbean cultures. We show that as Black Americans, these movements feel native to our bodies and connect us to our brothers and sisters across the world. This work aims to highlight the connections between movements throughout and across the African Diaspora. It showcases Black American vernacular movements and Black contemporary dance forms while also infusing social and folk dances across the Caribbean, West Africa, and Southern Africa into movements.

Confronting questions of masculinity, race, sexuality and religion, the Leaves find strength in the prophetic words of Frederick Douglass and other Black poet-philosophers. Their wisdom, derived from pain, guides them toward self-actualization. Through this, they shine light on family dynamics, the continued struggle with systemic racism, and the ever empowering, but complex relationship with God.
